Continuity of learning is the key focal point for us at BISL, regardless of the restricted access to the premises itself. Our teachers have prepared a range of strategies and skills that will enable a seamless use of online learning for our students during this time.
As part of our Online learning policy, teachers are using a variety of online learning tools in line with their curriculum planning to enhance student learning. These online tools include but are not limited to Canvas, subscribed online portals and external websites that have been checked by the member of staff for suitability for that age group and relevance to the curriculum. All online learning, including homework tasks are being sent out via email to parents in the first instance, with links to Canvas and other external applications as appropriate.
In Early Years, teachers are emailing a minimum of three new learning opportunities each school day and require parents to send one response each day, in the form of text, photographs or videos.
In Primary, teachers are providing learning opportunities for each timetabled session on an adapted timetable and communicated throughout the week. There is an expectation that each day, students experience a range of literacy-based sessions (reading, writing, Phonics etc), mathematical sessions (number, calculation, problem-solving etc), other subjects (science, Topic, art, etc) and other activities set by Specialist teachers (music, Slovene, French, PE etc).
In Secondary, teachers provide learning opportunities for each timetabled session on an adapted timetable, including reading, questions, various exercises and other means of learning across all subjects.

Students follow a structured Maths course on Canvas.
The Year 6 class had an online discussion about a ‘Big Question’ where they could post their own thoughts and ideas as well as respond to those of others.
Students had to complete a writing task using set success criteria based on a story shared by their class teacher.
Mr Kokalj has been covering how to solve word problems using algebraic expressions with Year 6, with students showing their workings by uploading a photo of their work on Canvas.
For those who needed a challenge, Mrs Charlesworth posted a link to some tough questions involving simultaneous equations – how many can you solve?
Our Year 7 students are part of a French pen-pal project. They are currently working on answering the correspondence they received last week and are at liberty to choose the medium they feel is most efficient to complete this task.
Our Year 9 students have been going the extra mile while covering the topic of holidays in French by extending their skills and knowledge by completing optional work on the topic.

Tips to help our students keep on track with their schoolwork and routines at home:
- Consistency is key: maintain your regular morning routine of waking up, eating a nutritious breakfast, and getting dressed.
- Pick a spot that is free of distractions to set up your device and study materials.
- Create a daily schedule and use a spreadsheet to keep track of all your tasks, assignments and deadlines.
- Take breaks: eat healthy snacks and do exercises to stay energised and alert.
- Stay engaged in your e-learning: engaging with your teachers and classmates can help you stay connected with your school community. Reach out to your peers and advisors for extra help when needed.
