What is BISL?

BISL = British International School of Ljubljana

What curriculum does BISL follow?

BISL follows the English National Curriculum, from Early Years through Sixth Form. Students work towards IGCSEs and A Levels, internationally recognised qualifications that open doors to leading universities worldwide.

What subjects are taught at BISL?

Early Years & Primary: Core literacy and numeracy, enriched with topic-based exploration in science, history, geography, art, languages, and physical education.

Secondary: A comprehensive selection including English language & literature, maths, sciences (biology, chemistry, physics), computer science, history, geography, business studies, economics, psychology, Slovene, French, art & design, music, PE, and PSHE (personal, social, and health education). Students choose specific subjects for their IGCSE and A-Level exams.

Do you accept students throughout the year?

Yes. As an international school, we understand that families may relocate at different times of the year. We offer rolling admissions and welcome new students whenever spaces are available.

How big are the class sizes?

Our classes are intentionally small, allowing teachers to provide individual attention and personalised support. Typical class sizes range from 12–18 students.

What year group will my child join?

Placement is based on age, previous schooling, and academic background, aligned with the English National Curriculum. Our Admissions Team will guide you to ensure your child is placed in the most suitable year group.

How successful are BISL graduates?

Our students consistently achieve exam results above the UK average and progress to top global universities, including those in the UK, Europe, North America, and beyond.

What does a typical school day at BISL look like?

The school day at BISL is structured to provide a balance of academic learning, enrichment, and well-being.

  • Primary (Early Years & Primary School): The day begins at 8:20 and finishes at 2:45.

  • Secondary (Secondary & Sixth Form): The day begins at 8:20 and finishes at 3:30.

Afterschool clubs and activities take place after lessons and usually run until 4:30 or 5:00, depending on the programme.

Can my child enrol if they only have basic English?

Yes, absolutely. Many of our students join with little or no English at first. We warmly welcome them and provide tailored support through our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme. Our teachers adapt lessons to different ability levels, helping children develop their English quickly while still progressing in all other subjects.

How does BISL support children who are not native English speakers?

We offer English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, fully integrated into our curriculum. This ensures that every child can succeed academically and socially, even if English is not their first language.

What is the price for the English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme?

All students complete an English placement test upon enrollment. Based on the results, students are placed into one of three tiers depending on the level of support they require:

Tier 1 – Basic Support: €200 per term

Tier 2 – Moderate Support: €700 per term

Tier 3 – Intensive Support: €1,000 per term

This structure ensures that every child receives the right level of English support, fully integrated into the curriculum, so they can thrive academically and socially from day one.

What extracurricular opportunities are available?

Each year, BISL creates a curated list of after-school activities based on student feedback from annual surveys. This ensures that our clubs reflect the interests and passions of our community. At the start of the academic year, the full programme is shared with parents so they can register their children. A wide range of activities—from sports and music to languages, arts, and academic clubs—can be found in our After-School Provision section.

What makes BISL different from other schools in Slovenia?

BISL is Slovenia’s longest-established international school, with a proven track record of academic success and community trust. We combine a respected British academic foundation with a truly international student body and a safe, supportive environment.

How can families apply, and are places still available?

Admissions at BISL are open throughout the year, depending on availability. Families can begin the process by contacting our Admissions Team to arrange a personal visit of the school or, if they are abroad, an online meeting to learn more about our community.

Once a family decides that BISL is the right choice for their child, they submit the application form through our online portal. After all required documents are provided, the application is reviewed and approved by the Principal. Successful applicants then receive an offer letter confirming a place for their child.

To secure the place, families sign the offer letter and pay the initial admission charges:

  • €750 deposit (refundable under certain conditions)

  • €1,200 admission fee
    Total: €1,950 per child

Once these fees are paid, the child’s place is officially reserved. Tuition fees can then be settled either in one annual payment or in three instalments, with the first instalment due before the student’s first day of school.

This structured admissions process ensures transparency and gives families peace of mind that their child’s place at BISL is secure.
