Here at BISL we focus on fostering a love of learning and self-discovery with many different approaches to learning. Part of our philosophy is for our children to spend as much time outdoors as possible.
The building crew have made a great start to clearing the Woodland area extension this week. This will more than double the outdoor learning space for our students in the coming academic year as part of our campus development.
Next to the day trips and adventure days that are part of our off-site learning, students at BISL also engage in a variety of on-site outdoor learning activities throughout the academic year. Outdoor learning environments are important for encouraging healthy behaviours and improving the physical, educational and mental wellbeing of children and young people. They also connect children and young people to the natural world creating a sense of responsibility for the environment.
What are the Benefits of Outdoor Learning?
- enhanced personal and social communication skills – developing self-esteem, taking personal responsibility, and cooperating with and respecting the needs of others;
- enhanced physical, mental and spiritual health - promoting a positive and knowledgeable response towards personal health and wellbeing;
- enhanced sensory, and aesthetic awareness – a sense of discovery and fascination impacting meaningful learning with stimuli different to that in the normal classroom environment;
- raised awareness of the need for sustainable relationships between people and their environment - extending their personal horizons through greater appreciation and understanding of the world around them;
- enhanced practical problem-solving and teamwork skills.
We are very excited to see the daily developments in the clearing of the Woodland area extension, giving our teachers even more opportunities to involve students in outdoor curriculum-based activities on school premises.
