Adventure Days 2020

Adventure Days have always been important in our school and for our students, as they play a vital role in the development of students, bringing some unforgettable memories they can cherish for life.

Throughs these trips, we aim to connect students from different year groups and CHALLENGEthem with various orienteering, navigation, route planning, camping and team building tasks.

This year, to enhance these trips further, we've incorporated some of the aspects of the popular Duke of Edinburgh's International Award (MEPI), encouraging students to participate in the programme through the academic year.

On the first trip, our youngest students from Years 7 and 8 successfully completed all of the challenges that were planned for them during the 2 days of hiking. The trip started in the beautiful small village of Merezige and finishing at a camping site in Izola for the evening. The students continued their journey on the second day along the Slovenian coast, reaching their final destination at Fiesa beach.

Some of the CHALLENGES that students completed:

Distance hiked: 30 kilometres
Elevation climbed: 300 meters
Tents set up independently
Gaining new orienteering and navigation skills
Successful route planning
Working as a team to find the correct way to their final destination
Correctly building a fire at camp
Enjoying the beautiful scenery and jumping in the sea for the last time before winter arrives

The older students from Years 9 and 10 were up next. The location and route of this hike was completely different to the first trip. The older the students, the more challenging these trips become, so this group journeyed into the mountains to the centre of the picturesque Julian Alps, not far from the highest peak of Slovenia, Mount Triglav.

The start of the journey was on Pokljuka, climbing up to the Vodnikov hut for the night and descending to the finishing point of Bohinj lake on the second day of the trip. Being lucky with the weather on both days, the students were able to enjoy the views and landscapes of the alps. Congratulations, and huge RESPECT from our Trip Leaders to all the students for completing this difficult hike.

Ascent: 700 meters
Descent: 1300 meters
Gaining new orienteering and navigation skills
Successful route planning
Working as a team to find the correct way to their final destination

The final trip was reserved for our oldest students from Years 11 to 13. As the weather forecast did not look promising, the route was adjusted for safety of our students, but the difficulty of the hiking challenges remained the same.

Our utmost RESPECT to the students and staff for completing probably one of the most difficult hikes in BISL history, many of whom were first time hikers. Their adventure started in Rateče and finished at a high altitude on the Vršič pass, where the group spend the night. On the second day, the weather did not disappoint, heavy rain came down as predicted, making the descent down to the finish point in Kranjska Gora a real challenge. The content silence on the bus ride back to Ljubljana was more than enough proof that our students have achieved above and beyond what they had set out to do and was a true testament to the amount of energy they put into this experience.
