There were a number of highlights of this tour of Ljubljana’s majestic and historic buildings as part of our Topic, Buildings. The funicular railway gave us a bird’s eye view over the city as we climbed to the base of the castle. The castle treasure hunt improved our impression further as we climbed to the top of the viewing tour, to give us a 360 ° panorama as our tour guide pointed out the key features of the city, with the Ljubljanica river snaking its way through.
The visit to the outdoor dungeons was only just one of the memorable elements of the treasure hunt. The visit to meet the castle’s dragon, and travelling around the castle on their imaginary horses are ones children enjoyed the most, but there were many more highlights, such as finding out about the history of the castle in the cinema room.
The winding walk down into the old city, charged with the task of finding the most beautiful historic city buildings to present later in a Holiday Brochure, allowed the opportunity to really see the ornate facades and history that we so often miss. Plečnik’s famous Three Bridges and the Central Post Office, built around the same time as New York’s famous Statue of Liberty, provided a timeline which continued through to the grand buildings and Plečnik’s promenade in Tivoli Garden. Finally, we rounded off our day nicely with a hot pizza and drinks in the Golf Club mini cafe followed by a playtime on the swings and slides.
