During Block 5, Year 1 children have enjoyed researching and discussing how various buildings around the world have been constructed, the different materials used how durable these are, and even have attempted to test the strength of a straw, paper and Duplo house. Guess which was the one that didn’t get blown over? Actually it was the building made of paper!
On Friday 9 March as a conclusion to our topic of ‘Buildings’, the Year 1 children set off on a cold, crisp and sunny morning, travelling by bus to visit Plečnik House. On arrival, we wandered through the streets to look at some of the beautiful buildings and structures that Jože Plečnik had designed and also others that were equally decorative with interesting frescos, that all capture the small wonders of Ljubljana. The children were so excited to be going to this area, as some of them live in the vicinity but also some attend extra-curricular music activities in a school nearby.
The museum was beautiful, a special gem. The guides were great and really explained everything imaginable to the children. Each room was set out as if Mr Plecnik was still working there. The garden still had a sprinkling of snow of the ground, but best of all the snowdrops and crocuses were showing their little heads and even some miniature daffodils were out. I was amazed at how many of the herbs the children could name when these were rubbed between their fingers.
After this wonderful, educational experience, the children walked to ‘Focculus’ for a well-deserved pizza. Every plate was empty at the end of the meal so the children had really built up an appetite. The children were polite and well-mannered as always and a credit to BISL.
We eventually went back to catch bus number 8 to take us back to school and arriving on time at 14:30!
Thanks to Julia M., Julia Z., Shena and Petra for their support and their photographs.
It was a wonderful trip and if you have not visited, you should plan a visit there one day.
In conclusion, the children still talk about the trip and individually give detailed accounts of what they learnt about Jože Plečnik and his life, his architectural skills and provide fascinating descriptions of his house. Obviously, the visit made a great impact on Year 1 class and it is lovely to listen to children talking about their trip in such detail.
