We have had a jam-packed Block 5 with many wonderful and exciting things going on in Primary.
For ‘Let’s Pretend’ topic, Preschool visited the National Gallery of Ljubljana to explore paintings, dragons and other historical artefacts, and enjoyed a play at the Puppet Theatre of Ljubljana. During their ‘Shopping’ topic they practiced their purchasing skills at Ljubljana Central Market.
To learn about their topic of ‘Houses and Buildings’, Y1 visited Ljubljana city and Plečnik House, while linking this to their literacy activities and the story of the Three Little Pigs. Furthermore, the Y1 put on a great assembly and performance of Traditional Tales for their parents. Y1 parents were equally involved in coming to share their experiences with students, such as talking about their adventures and holidays abroad, and educating students on the dangers of earthquakes. To expand their knowledge on this topic, Y2 classes ventured to Ljubljana town: Y2A also visited the Plečnik House, while Y2B took a tour of the Ljubljana Castle.
Y3 and Y4 parents were invited to engage with the students' learning of the ‘Temples, Tombs and Treasures’ topic. Classes were transformed into exciting and mysterious scenes for parents to explore with student guides. Other year-groups also enjoyed the tour and learned about mummification, Hieroglyphs and various jobs they could apply for in ancient Egypt. The visit to Jožef Štefan Institute provided Y5 and Y6 students with opportunity to study about electricity and robotics. In the meantime, Y4 Slovene classes engaged in a workshop and exploration of various collectors items such as stamps and coins at the Collecta Fair 2018 in Ljubljana.
In primary assemblies we celebrated a number of multicultural events. Thanks to Ms. Williams, students and staff were able to taste foods to go with the celebrations, such as pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and Welsh cakes for St. David’s Day, where learned about the fable of St. David and how this is celebrated in Wales. We learned about the Chinese New Year and 2018 being the Year of the Dog.
BISL Primary Scouts group received awards for various skills they have displayed during their training run by the Scouts leader Katarina Miklavec. You can read more about the Scouts Program here. In Primary, students can also get the taste for what it means to be a ‘Scout’ during the Period 9 Activities run by Miss. Miklavec. The Irish Dancing activity club demonstrated their beautiful dancing skills during their performance for parents and the Whole-School Assembly at the end of the term. On the music front, the primary students participated in the ‘digichoir’ video 2018that combines all the participating schools and is organised by the UK-based Sing Up foundation. The Primary Student Council have also been very busy bees, from tidying up and designing improvements to the cloakroom space, to making their own badges, and continuing to monitor the sports equipment.
The swimming program in Primary has been revised this year in order to give students the ultimate opportunity to engage in different swimming activities. For Y1-Y6 three Swimming Sports Days will be organised in May and June (one day for Reception children). All programs will be run by qualified swimming instructors and include tuition of various swimming techniques, as well as, development of particular skills through water sports and team games. Activities will be differentiated according to students’ abilities, so that all can keep safe and still have a lot of fun!
