As our Science Block celebration draws to a close, we bring you a delightful interview with Mr Stanič, our enthusiastic Physics teacher.

After getting a Bachelor's degree in Physics and Astrophysics, Mr Stanič completed his Master's in Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Sciences. Prior to joining BISL, he worked as a life insurance actuary and teaching assistant demonstrator for Mathematics and Physics at one of the Slovene universities. In his free time, Mr Stanič loves to nurture his passion for foreign languages.

Briefly describe your journey as a teacher.

My passion for teaching started during my studies when I was offered a position of a teaching assistant demonstrator in English language at my previous university, where I was performing Math tutorials and exercises for Environmental science students. After graduating with a degree in Physics, I continued my studies and enrolled to a Master's degree in Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science (we bet you are about to Google what this is) to become an insurance financial mathematician, and then I soon started working as a life insurance actuary. The desire to teach and help young people, as well as to motivate them for science, was one of the key factors why I decided to continue my career in teaching. I was very glad when I was offered a Science Teacher position at BISL.

Why did you decide to specialize in Physics?

I have always had a passion for science, ever since I was a small kid, but I was never sure which field I would like to specialize in. However, after enjoying my Physics lesson during my schooling, I realized that Physics is everywhere. It is the foundation for Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, and almost every fundamental process in nature is based on it. As a Physicist, you also have countless options to work in various fields, such as Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Finance, Industry, Research, and even more, so the decision for me to choose Physics was very easy to make.

What makes BISL such a unique place to work?

BISL is a unique place to work, because we are such a nice international community of both students and the staff who prove everyday that in today's world, the key to success is being international. As the world and economy are developing, the opportunity to study in a foreign language and the ability to master the English language as well as to receive the best possible knowledge and teaching quality from experienced staff is one of the best things what young people can be offered. The students make strong bonds, connections and friendships, which remain long after they graduate and continue to achieve their goals at universities all over the world.

How would you describe a typical day at BISL?

My typical day starts in the morning, when I arrive at school, check my e-mail and briefly discuss with other members of our Science team if there are any particular tasks or issues that day. After that, I head to my lovely form 7A, where we do the morning registration, presentation, quizzes and solve any issues if they are present. Then it is almost time for teaching. I teach 3 different subjects (Y7 Mathematics, Y10-13 Physics and Further Mechanics). In the middle of the day, I enjoy taking lunch together with my Science department in the school canteen when we have a chance to quickly discuss how the day is going. On Thursdays, I also enjoy organizing the Physics club for Primary students, when we perform lots of interesting experiments.

Why is the experience of an international education important for a student?

International education is in my opinion one of the best things a student can be offered. Learning in a foreign language, international curriculum and a mix of classmates from all over the world make a unique experience which offers the best possibilities to succeed and continue the studies at prestigious foreign universities. Students at international schools also have the opportunity to discover cultures around the world and broaden their horizons, as well as make meaningful connections for the future. People who want to succeed in today's world need to have all these skills.
