In this week’s Teacher Feature, we shine the spotlight on Mr Dan MacNeill, our brilliant Science Teacher.

Originally from Portsmouth, England, Mr MacNeill obtained his Biochemistry degree from the University of Newcastle, before completing his PGCE at Leeds University. Never missing an opportunity to ignite students’ curiosity with his enthusiasm and passion for the world of sciences, our students thoroughly enjoy their lessons with Mr MacNeill every day!

Briefly describe your journey as a teacher.

I’ve had an interest in becoming a teacher years before I started to train to become one, so it was only natural to choose it as a career. I completed by teacher training in Leeds and then stayed in the city after for another 4 years, working in two schools within that time.

Why did you decide to specialise in Science?

I’ve had a passion for science, specifically chemistry, since I was around 11, when science becomes more prominent within education in England. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of understanding difficult concepts and applying them to problems, and when they’re relatable to real life, which they often are, it makes it more interesting and satisfying.

What makes BISL such a unique place to work?

The mix of life experiences and cultures within the staff and students make BISL a very unique place to be, where people can share their experiences and learn from others. The advantages of a smaller school, with its smaller class sizes, are great too, allowing personalised learning and support to take place within the classroom. A pleasure as a teacher and so beneficial to students!

How would you describe a typical day at BISL?

I often get in early to ensure my lessons are ready and prepared for the day, after which it’s a busy day of Form time and lessons. In the free periods I have, there is always planning, marking or general administration to be done, all of this makes the school day fly by! After the school day is finished, it’s either meetings, planning & marking or running a club. I play volleyball after school on Fridays, which is a great way to end the week!

Why is the experience of an international education important for a student?

Attending an international school is such a unique experience, students come across so many different cultures and experiences from their peers and teachers, allowing them to develop into well-rounded, worldly individuals. There is also the additional benefit of the English proficiency they develop when they’re here, either through targeted EAL support or by simply practising everyday, a language which will allow the world to be their oyster!
