Class Allocation

Placing your child in the right class is very important in their development. We allocate students to a class based on the following criteria:

  • Age according to the UK schools' criteria
  • Academic background (e.g. having already completed a specific year in the British system at a previous school).
  • Special circumstances based on observations and for specific social/emotional (non-academic) reasons.

Please note that whilst each student is considered individually and with reference to their educational background, based on best practice we do not generally advocate putting children in classes ahead of their age group.

Our school reserves the right, based on professional judgement, to move a student to another class and/or year group following careful consideration and clear communication with the parents should we feel the student is not optimally placed.

Admissions Criteria

As a non-selective school, we do not have admission criteria or language requirements for students entering Early Years and Primary school (up to and including Year 6). In order to enable our students to fully access the curriculum for their external examinations after Year 10 however, students applying to enter Secondary school (Year 7 and above) will need a certain level of English proficiency, which will be assessed prior to admission.

We offer a comprehensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme for those students who require extra support in this area.

In addition to the level of English proficiency, the acceptance of students into Year 12 will also depend on their previous IGCSE examination results (or equivalent).

Students aged 6 and above will take a Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4), either prior to or following admission, to allow us to understand the student's wider abilities. CAT4s are the UK’s most widely used computer-based test of reasoning abilities for children aged 6-17+ years. Measuring the four main types of ability known to make a difference to learning and achievement, CAT4 provides an independent perspective on potential student achievement, with reliable information for each child that will help identify where to provide extra support or set more challenging targets.
