Our Principal, Mel Hitchcocks, recently had an interview with our national radio station, Radio Si, where she discussed the profound impact her love for education has had on her passion for music. During the interview, Mel revealed that her guiding mantra as Principal is inspired by the iconic Queen song, "Don't Stop Me Now," a song introduced to her by her inspirational father.
Mel's journey began with a career in Publishing and Sales, mainly in London. However, her true calling was to become a teacher, and her unwavering determination and dedication led her to make significant life changes in order for her to become a teacher.
She sold everything and pursued her dream of becoming an educator. Starting as a teacher for Special Needs students, Mel firmly believes that teaching is one of the most crucial professions, carrying immense responsibility. She emphasizes the importance of reflection in the teaching process while maintaining a strong passion for the job.
At BISL, our focus is on the education of the whole child. Our approach fosters critical thinking skills, teamwork, and hands-on practical learning experiences designed to prepare students for the challenges of the twenty-first century.
Part of the UK based, Orbital Education Group, we are guided by our core values of responsibility, compassion, excellence, respect, and integrity.
By fostering a supportive and empathetic environment, we encourage students to take ownership of their learning and treat others with kindness. Setting high standards and promoting honesty, we inspire students to strive for personal growth and academic achievement while upholding ethical principles.
The interview also delved into Mel's love for literature, mentioning her favourite authors such as Hilary Mantel, Ian Rankin, and Val McDermid. While Mel now enjoys reading on her Kindle, she recognizes the significance of physical books in a child's educational journey. Consequently, the school has upgraded the library, purchasing several thousands euros of new books, and held an immensely successful Book Fair in June.
Mel's dedication to the school's improvement is evident, with plans for a new playground set to be completed by the start of the new academic year. Moreover, her primary focus is on enhancing learning outcomes for all students, ensuring they receive the best possible education at BISL.
Education changed my life...it is something I feel really passionate about.
