News from Primary Nov 29 2019

Primary students have enjoyed lots of events within and outside of school in these past two weeks.

Halloween Party, with workshops, games and goodies was organised by the PTA last week for all of BISL Community. Students were able to show off their wonderful costumes in the Halloween Parade. I would like to say a big thank you to the PTA for all the effort they put into decorating the school and creating an exciting atmosphere for all to enjoy.

On Monday 4th November, students and staff learned about our Founder Jeremy Hibbins. A tree-planting ceremony was held in the school woodland as a memorial.

This Wednesday, new parents and students visited the school for the Open Day. Well done to all the primary students for being such good hosts, showcasing their work and welcoming visitors to join into classroom activities.

Students from each class presented an important person in history in our Primary Assembly today, as part of the Humanities theme and competition of this Block. Well done to Y6A for winning with their presentation of Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist, known chiefly for his development of the concept of the conditioned response. One of his famous sayings:

Early Years have been learning about 2D shapes as part of their Patterns Topic. They have been making shapes with lego, paint and stamps. They have been ordering and sorting different shapes as well as finding shapes around the classroom. The best part has been creating their own special patterns with shapes!

Year 2 have had a fantastic block with lots of fun and exciting things happening. In Topic, we have been looking at ways to keep our brains healthy and the most effective ways we can learn. This week, we discussed ways in which we can look after our brains, identifying that exercise was an important element in maintaining our brain healthy. Year 2 have been working very hard throughout this block and I am looking forward to the coming weeks and starting our new topic 'celebrations'.

Wow, what a pleasant block Year 5 have had. This week we loved attending the Ljubljana museum and finding out about the history of different civilisations. Children have written their end of unit assessment in English which contained language fit for a full-time writer.

In Maths, we have been exploring fractions and investigating the amounts of ingredients needed to make a cake. I can’t wait for Block 3!

Tuesday of this week saw Year 5 and 6 travel to the centre of the town to visit the City Museum of Ljubljana.

This tied in perfectly with the Topics Year 5 and 6 worked on in Block 1 - 'Settlements' and 'Civilisations'. We got to see the rich history of Ljubljana from 42,000 years ago to the present day: Pile-dwellers, Emona, Middle and New Ages, the 20th and 21st centuries, all with authentic artefacts, including the world's oldest wooden wheel!

The best part though was wearing Roman armour and entering the dragon's lair.

Performing Arts students (from Year 2 through Year 7) are continuing to work on their musical, A Christmas Carol. They look forward to presenting it to the school community on Wednesday, December 4th, at 4pm. Please note the changed date on your calendar!

We would like to thank all the students, parents and teachers once again who were involved in this year's marathon event. We think this is one of the best and biggest sports events to get a chance to represent and show our school sport spirit. Next year we will do it again, hopefully in an even bigger number.

We were delighted with our spooky Halloween celebrations this year at the British International School of Ljubljana!

A very special thanks to our wonderful PTA who organised this fantastic occasion and decorated the school from top to bottom. We appreciate the time, effort and organisation that went into this special day. We are also grateful for the support of all parents involved in the costumes, decorations, finger food, and attending our Halloween afternoon party.

We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our amazing Sixth Form students who organised a 6th Form Movie Night for our younger students.

It has been an honour to celebrate Founder's Day this year with a range of tributes, together with a planting ceremony of a memorial tree in our Woodland Area, which will serve as a meaningful dedication to our Founder, Jeremy Hibbins, and will be a permanent reminder for future staff and students to observe.

We've had an activity-packed Open Day here at BISL!

Open Days are the perfect opportunity for families to tour our facilities, find out how our students learn, meet our teachers, and speak to some of our students, giving a real first-hand experience of our growing school - thank you to everyone who joined us.
