What is BISL?

BISL = British International School of Ljubljana

What does a typical school day at BISL look like?

All students, whether in Primary or Secondary, follow the same school schedule. The day begins at 07:50 and finishes at 14:50. After school, students may join one club activity, which runs until 15:40 at the latest.

During the school day, there are two breaks:

Morning snack break (around 9:00–10:00) – students bring a healthy snack from home.

Lunch break (around 12:00–13:00) – students may bring a packed lunch or order school lunch at an additional cost.

Does my child need to speak fluent English before joining BISL?

Not at all. Many of our students join with little or no English at first. We warmly welcome students of all language backgrounds and provide tailored support through our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme.

Our teachers adapt lessons to different ability levels, helping students develop their English skills confidently and quickly while continuing to make progress across all other subjects.

How does BISL support children who are not native English speakers?

We offer English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, fully integrated into our curriculum. This ensures that every child can succeed academically and socially, even if English is not their first language.

What is the price for the English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme?

All students complete an English placement test upon enrollment. Based on the results, students are placed into one of three tiers depending on the level of support they require:

Tier 1 – Basic Support: €200 per term

Tier 2 – Moderate Support: €700 per term

Tier 3 – Intensive Support: €1,000 per term

This structure ensures that every child receives the right level of English support, fully integrated into the curriculum, so they can thrive academically and socially from day one.

How international is the BISL community?

Our students come from over 40 nationalities, creating a vibrant multicultural community. English is the main language of instruction, uniting students while celebrating cultural diversity.

What makes BISL different from other schools in Slovenia?

BISL is Slovenia’s longest-established international school, with a proven track record of academic success and the trust of our community. We combine a respected British academic foundation with a truly international student body, fostering a safe and supportive environment where children can thrive.

In addition, our school operates with a structured and professional approach, underpinned by clear policies and procedures that ensure consistency, high standards, and a well-organized learning environment. This structured framework benefits both students and staff, helping everyone achieve their full potential while maintaining a nurturing and collaborative atmosphere.
